Service women during World War II were present in Portland. About 150 WACS (Women’s Army Corps) were assigned lodging in the Congress Square Hotel. They were stationed in the U.S. Army Air Corps Air Warning Service Filter Center. The residence for WAVE officers attached to the U.S. Naval Station was in the West End.
