Home of Edith A. (Saucier) Beaulieu

13 Sheridan Street

Edith A. Beaulieu, after marrying Edgar Beaulieu in 1956, raised her family here while representing Munjoy Hill and Portland’s Casco Bay islands in the state legislature from 1976-1986. She and Edgar moved in 1980 to Congress Street, on the corner of Emerson Street in 1980. Mrs. Beaulieu sponsored over 50 bills during her service in the legislature, many of which subsequently became law and remain so today. They included placement of smoke detectors in hotels, motels, and apartments; speedy demolition of unsafe buildings; computerizing the Workers Compensation Board; and laws for Workers’ Compensation and Unemployment Compensation. She served on the Portland School Committee, the Portland Public Library, the Portland Regional School Building Committee, was a founder and chair of the Portland School Safety Committee, and the only woman to serve on Maine’s Advisory Committee on Firefighter Education and Training. Mrs. Beaulieu passed away in 2013. Cynthia Lovejoy, one of her daughters, said she was a remarkable woman.
