Eastland Park Hotel

(now Westin Portland Harborview Hotel)

157 High Street/Congress Square

The Eastland Park Hotel (later, The Eastland) became a major employer of women as chambermaids, laundresses, and waitresses after it opened in 1927. Many of those female workers in the 1920s were Irish immigrants. The manager for many years was Adeline Bond Rines (1887-1976), who took over management of the hotel and her husband’s other enterprises, including a radio station, after his sudden death in 1939. Earlier, Rines, who had read law as a clerk in a law office, was the first woman in Portland to obtain a degree in law and admitted to the Cumberland Bar Association.
