Rosa A. True School

140 Park Street

The Rosa E. True School, by the time it closed in 1972, was said to be the oldest continuously used elementary school in the United States. Built in 1844, the building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It received its present name in 1923 to honor a longtime teacher and principal who died in 1917. The Portland West Neighborhood Council (site W01) renovated the building to create low income housing in 1987.
