Little is known about Rhoda Partridge (1755-1834) except that she was the first female schoolteacher in the school in Stroudwater Village, which was directly across Congress Street on a hill between Waldo and Westbrook Streets. She was engaged to Daniel Dole, Jr., who fell in love with and married Rhoda’s niece, making Rhoda the “spurned woman” of the village. Dole later took in Rhoda. Rhoda was the only child of Preserved and Catherine (Armstrong) Partridge’s ten children to die unmarried. She is interred in the Stroudwater Burying Ground on Westbrook Street, just around the corner of where she made her home.
