Dr. Alice Whittier (1898-1994) was Maine’s first woman pediatrician. An early woman graduate of Yale Medical School, Dr. Whittier served as Chief of Pediatrics at Maine Medical Center (site W08). She is remembered as a doctor who served all the patients who came to her, regardless of their ability to pay. Dr. Whittier said in an article she wrote in 1953 that there had been 24 women members of the Maine Medical Association by 1913. She singled out Dr. Mary Alice Avery (1849-1904) and Lucinda B. Hatch (1864-1959), once president of the Cumberland County Medical Society, as having pioneering practices in Portland.
