Gorham’s Corner Walk

Women of the Working Class

Portland’s position on Casco Bay shaped the role of women’s (and men’s) work. Likewise, the availability of women, including married women with children, for seasonal work made some industries such as fish packing possible. Many women from Gorham’s Corner and other nearby neighborhoods worked in canneries in the late nineteeth and twentieth centuries. Today, canning still draws immigrant women as laborers.
